Kathleen Surina Grove, MA, JD
Director, Office for Women, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
Kathleen S. Grove has been the Director of the IUPUI Office for Women since 2004 and is an associate faculty member in the Women’s Studies Program of the IU School of Liberal Arts, Indianapolis where she has taught the courses, “Women and the Law” and “Women’s Rights around the World.”
Kathleen holds a J.D. degree from Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis and a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. Her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech is from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
As Director of the Office for Women, she serves the IUPUI campus by promoting an inclusive and equitable working and learning environment for all and by supporting women in reaching their full potential as faculty, staff or students. Under her leadership, the office has developed a full range of programming that benefits all faculty, staff and students including workshops on tenure and promotion, career development, leadership skills, professional development and gender equity. She maintains the key indicators for the advancement of women first developed by the Task Force on the Status of Women in 1994 and reports these to the Diversity Council and Chancellor’s Cabinet. She successfully petitioned the administration to conduct a second faculty gender pay equity study in 2009 which was accomplished by the Office of Equal Opportunity. She regularly partners with local and national organizations to bring programming to the IUPUI campus such as the Working Women in Transition series of the Indiana Commission on Women and the Start Smart Workshops of the WAGE Project and the American Association of University Women. As part of the 40th Anniversary of IUPUI, she acquired funding and directed the construction of the archival website, “Women Creating Excellence at IUPUI.”
From 2002 through 2008 she was a member of the Indiana Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, and Mental Health Counselor Licensing Board (now the Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board) and served as President of the board in 2004. In 2009, Ms. Grove was presented with an Award of Merit from the Indiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy for her contributions to the profession.
From 2008-2010 she served as co-chair of the Multicultural Teaching Community of Practice which won the IUPUI 2010 Joseph T. Taylor Award for Excellence in Diversity. Her research interests include domestic and international women’s leadership development, multicultural pedagogy and feminist jurisprudence. In November 2011, she received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Women’s Studies Association Women’s Center Committee. The award honors “women working in women’s centers/gender equity centers who have accomplished a significant endeavor to improve the lives of women, and have addressed gender equity, sexism and other forms of oppression.”
